Dead Island is an upcoming open world horror action adventure video game in development by Techland for Microsoft Windows, Playstation 3, and Xbox 360. It is centered on the challenge of survival on a zombie-infested island with a major emphasis on melee combat. Dead Island places the player on the tropical paradise of Banoi. You play as a guest of the island, attempting to have a luxurious vacation on the island, but that all changes quickly when an unexpected zombie epidemic occurs — forcing your stay to change from relaxing on the beach to surviving wherever you deem plausible.

Loaded with what I consider to be one of the most powerful trailers of all time (see above), Dead Island features a heavily interactive open world, which will be ventured through in first person, with the option of up to 3 friends playing along side of you (local or over xbox live). Weapons will be customizable, as will vehicles, and even your character will be customizable thanks to the use of an experience system and a skill tree. It seems like this will be quite an intricate game; players will notice the weather changing from time to time in the game. Enemies will also have a multi-layered damage system with real-time injuries. This will give players the ability to take down enemies in entirely new ways, and will give the game more depth than your typical hack n’ slash.

One downside about the game is that it will not play like the trailer shows. It will be an arcade style game, similar to that of Dead Rising. Hopefully it is even better than Dead Rising, with a more interesting story, a longer campaign, and a better multiplayer system, and from the looks of it so far, it most  certainly has potential. Not too much is known about the game since Techland is keeping it fairly hush hush, only releasing snippets of information through various teasers. Based on the few videos they have though, I’m pretty excited for this game. It could be the first great zombie game for the Xbox 360 ( I believe Left for Dead and Dead Rising were average)! Gamestop lists the release date for Dead Island as August 1, 2011, but don’t be surprised if that gets pushed back. The game’s release date has been pushed back before, which leads me to believe they won’t have any problems doing it again. Be sure to continue checking out The Rotting Cartridge as well! We plan to follow this potentially great game up and through release date.
